McDermott encourages Stinson, Blalock to stay at I-S-U

March 22, 2006 By admin

New Iowa State University men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott says he wants to talk to guards Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock about staying with the team. The two juniors announced last week that they intend to declare for the NBA draft.

During the press conference announcing him as the new coach, McDermott asked the crowd to tell Blalock and Stinson they’re wanted at I-S-U and the crowd responded with loud cheers and applause. Afterwards Blalock said he will not rule out returning to I-S-U. He says he’s definitely not going to hire and agent, so he has the option of coming back.

Blalock was asked about his impressions of the new Cyclone coach. Blalock says McDermott is “a fighter and as far as I know he’s a winner.” Blalock also says McDermott is tall, and he looks forward to getting to know him personally. McDermott says he told all the current I-S-U players that they’re starting over and the past does not matter. McDermott plans to meet with all the players individually and talk about their future.
