Man charged with arson in Southwest Iowa school fire

July 10, 2006 By admin

Authorities in southwestern Iowa have made an arrest in connection with a fire that gutted an elementary school over the weekend. The fire early Saturday morning caused several-million-dollars in damage to the Crescent Elementary School.

Investigators with the State Fire Marshall’s Office say the fire was intentionally set, and a 20-year-old Council Bluffs man was arrested later in the day Saturday in connection with the fire. Authorities say Robert McElroy Junior of Council Bluffs is charged with arson, trespassing and criminal mischief.

Four fire departments responded to the fire, which caused heavy damage to the entire building. Complete damage was reported in the cafeteria area, where the roof collapsed.
