Hawkeye football team to Alamo Bowl

November 21, 2006 By admin

Sources tell Radio Iowa the 2006 Iowa Hawkeye football team has been invited to the Alamo Bowl.

Last year’s Alamo Bowl featured Michigan and Nebraska. The game usually features the fourth-place finishers in the Big Ten and the Big 12.

Iowa has been a frequent visitor to the San Antonio, Texas event. The Hawkeyes first played in the Alamo Bowl in 1993, losing to California 37 to 3. The 1996 Alamo Bowl featured Iowa and Texas Tech, and the Hawkeyes won that game 27 to 0. The 2001 Alamo Bowl was a rematch of those two teams, with Iowa winning again, but in a much closer contest. The final score was 19 to 16.

This year’s Alamo Bowl is scheduled to kick-off at 3:30 p.m. on December 30th. A news conference is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. today to announce details of the 2006 game.
