Biden weighs in on Libby pardon

July 3, 2007 By admin

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is urging Democrats to flood the White House switchboard with calls today in protest of the president’s decision to erase the two-and-a-half year prison sentence of a former aide to the vice president.

"The president, from the day he took office, has demonstrated an incredible, incredible not only disregard for the law but an insensitivity to the sensibilities of the country," Biden says. "…This is total arrogance."

Biden, who is campaigning in Iowa today, says the president operates on a "go it alone" strategy and this episode is just part of that.  "It’s the same attitude that’s causing people to die in Iraq because of a refusal to change policy," Biden says. "…I find it remarkable."

According to Biden, who is a Delaware senator, Bush’s action does not correct an injustice, it exacerbates one. "My guess is this is a fairly universal sentiment, even among Republicans, that who in God’s name is this president to say that after all of this effort — as one person said: Paris Hilton gets more time in jail that Scooter Libby?" Biden says.

Biden made his comments during an interview with Radio Iowa. Biden campaigned in Cedar Rapids and Grinnell this morning. He’s due in central Iowa for events this afternoon and evening.
