Dust ignites causing explosion at plant near Oelwein

September 26, 2007 By admin

Damage is being assessed after an explosion jarred a feed and pet food factory in northeast Iowa. Workers at a rural Oelwein business will be picking up the pieces today, following a dust explosion that injured two people.

It happened at about 11 A.M. Tuesday at International Ingredient Corporation, which is at the old Purina Mills plant, located just northwest of Oelwein on Highway 3.

Dust from a conveyer belt ignited; the resulting explosion blew out some windows and destroyed the 85-foot vertical conveyor belt. Embers also flew into the basement, but the fire was nearly out by the time Oelwein firefighters arrived. A man and a woman, whose names were not released, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
