Victims of fatal crash in Pottawattamie County identified

November 6, 2007 By admin

Authorities in western Iowa’s Pottawattamie County have identified the two people killed in a three-vehicle accident Monday morning near Treynor. Sheriff’s officials say 52-year old Donald Elrod, of Council Bluffs, and 55-year old Billy Joe Rinehart, of Red Oak, died in the crash that also injured 25-year old Garrick McCollum, of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

The accident occurred at around 10:30 AM, two-miles north of Treynor near the intersection of 300th Street and Dogwood Road. Officials say McCollum’s pickup was headed east on Dogwood, when he either didn’t stop, or stopped and then continued through the intersection. As he entered 300th Street, his truck collided with Elrod’s southbound pickup.

The impact forced Elrod’s truck to travel into the northbound lane, where it collided head-on with a third pickup truck, driven by Rinehart. Officials say McCollum was taken to an Omaha hospital for treatment of his injuries.
