Mason City police investigate e-mail scam

October 3, 2008 By admin

Mason City police are looking into a scam that’s moved from the phone lines onto the Internet.

Earlier this week, Mason City police reported several people receiving an automated phone call claiming to be from the North Iowa Community Credit Union with the message stating that the recipient’s credit or debit card had been deactivated, with the recording asking the recipient to enter in their card information via the phone to reactivate their card.

At least one of the victims says their card has already been used overseas for an illegal transaction. Police now say that people across the area have started receiving fraudulent e-mails claiming to be from the same credit union and asking customers to click a link in the e-mail. Phone calls have now shifted to customers of the Iowa Heartland Credit Union.

If anyone has fallen victim to the scam, police say the first thing you should do is immediately contact the issuing bank of your card.
