Apparent murder-suicide in eastern Iowa

January 23, 2010 By O. Kay Henderson

A 43-year-old woman who neighbors say left her boyfriend and moved in with her brother was shot to death Friday night in a mobile home park just outside of Cedar Rapids.

The woman’s ex-boyfriend was found dead near Mount Vernon and authorities say he killed himself.

Tammy Jo Tomberlin was shot to death at about 7:30 Friday night. Her brother, 48-year-old Duane Roy Tomberlin, was also shot, as was another man.  Both men were taken to area hospitals.  Authorties say their injuries are not life-threatening.

Witnesses in the mobile home park told police they saw 42-year-old Christopher Allen Vogt leave the site of the shooting in a red pickup truck. Investigators used the signal from Vogt’s cell phone to track the truck and, about four hours later, authorities found the vehicle in a farm field near Mount Vernon.  Vogt was dead, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
