Fremont County farmer loses hand in accident

May 17, 2010 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Authorities in southwest Iowa say a Tabor man lost his hand in a farm-related accident on Sunday afternoon. Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope says 49-year-old Michael Landon was working with a manure spreader on a farm near Tabor when his hand was severed after being caught in the machine.

Sheriff Aistrope says when the spreader became jammed, Landon reached in to clear the debris and the drive shaft grabbed his nylon jacket and pulled the hand in. Landon was taken by private vehicle to the Tabor Fire Station before being flown by helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where his arm was amputated just below the elbow.
