Iowa battered by more severe weather

August 9, 2010 By O. Kay Henderson

Iowa was struck by another round of severe weather overnight, with torrential rain causing flooding and high winds knocking down trees, limbs and power lines.  As many as 15,000 homes were without power, with the Sioux City, Storm Lake and Des Moines areas seeing the highest amount of outages.

Lightning hit Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg early this morning.  Fire crews believe they’ve contained blaze, with damage limited to the exterior.

A National Weather Service spotter reported a tornado near Whiting in western Iowa at about 20 ’til nine Sunday night and 10 minutes later another spotter reported a funnel cloud near Templeton.

Rainfall amounts reported by the National Weather Service indicate over four inches of rain fell in the Albia and Newton areas early this morning.  Other reporting stations recorded significant rainfall, too.
