Company plans to build electric cars in Spirit Lake

June 16, 2011 By Matt Kelley

A plant in northwest Iowa will be producing electric vehicles soon. Polaris Industries officials plan to close a Global Electric Motorcars operation in Fargo, North Dakota and move some of the production to its plant in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Polaris is buying Global Electric from Chrysler Group. A spokesperson for Polaris said Global Electric operations will be moved to Polaris offices in Spirit Lake, the Minneapolis area and possibly a facility in Wyoming. It’s not clear yet how many new jobs the new production will require at the Spirit Lake plant, which already makes motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles.

Production of the on-road electric vehicles at Spirit Lake is expected to begin later this year.
