I-29 north of Council Bluffs close to reopening

September 23, 2011 By Radio Iowa Contributor

There’s good news for regular users of Interstate-29 north of Council Bluffs. Officials say the roadway may reopen to traffic late this afternoon after months of closure due to flooding and significant repairs once the water retreated.

Iowa D.O.T. spokeswoman Dena Gray-Fisher says I-29 from milepost 55 to 71 will reopen to traffic later today or tomorrow (Saturday), depending on how much they can accomplish in the next several hours.

Gray-Fisher says, “There’s lot of work underway today including some additional cleaning, checking of the pavement area and some painting.” I-29 is a major commute route for many as well as a primary north-south transportation thoroughfare for industry. Gray-Fisher says it will be a great relief to get the roadblocks down.

“This has been a long time since the very first part of June,” she says. “I know a lot of people are very anxious to get that road re-opened and we’re working hard to do that.” Gray-Fisher says as soon as those barricades are down, they will let the media know the roadway is open to traffic.
