Former Newton woman given jail time for gas spraying incident

November 1, 2011 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A former Newton woman will spend one week in jail for spraying gas on another woman during an argument at a convenience store. Barabara Smithhart now lives in Cedar Falls and pled guilty to assault. She was sentenced to seven days in jail with another 173 days of jail time suspended.

Smithhart is to have no contact with the victim for one year and pay a $315 fine, and a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge. Police say Smithhart sprayed a significant amount of gas on the woman, soaking her clothes during the incident just before 3:30 in the morning on August 21st.

The 46-year-old victim was not seriously hurt, but officers say her face, neck and arms became red and she complained of a burning sensation on her skin and eyes.
