Cedar Rapids man dies after accident on the river

June 14, 2013 By Dar Danielson

One of the men involved in an accident on the Cedar River in northwest Cedar Rapids has died. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 53-year-old Michael Paulsen of Cedar Rapids died after the jet ski he was operating ran into another being operated by his 56-year-old brother Gary.

A third person operating another watercraft on the river heard cries and helped pull the men out of the water. Cedar Rapids officials says Michael was unconscious when he pulled from the water. Both men were taken to a Cedar Rapids hospital where Michael later died. Gary Paulsen was treated and released.

The Iowa DNR is trying to sort out what led up to the fatal collision.
