Woodbury County drowning victim identified

July 15, 2013 By Radio Iowa Contributor

The Woodbury County Sheriff has identified the victim in a weekend drowning on the Little Sioux River near Oto. Twenty-five-year-old Derik Veilguth of Galva drowned Sunday when he lost his footing while fishing and fell into the river.

Investigators say one of Veilguth’s friends, Ben Stickney of Smithland, knew Veilguth could not swim and jumped in twice to try and save him, but the strong current and murky waters prevented a rescue. The accident happened shortly after 10:30 on Sunday morning.
