Two men from Spencer were among eight hunters who had to be rescued from the icy Missouri River Thursday. The eight men were rescued from the river near Santee, Nebraska by a Nebraska State Patrol helicopter around mid-afternoon Thursday. The men told the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission that there wasn’t any ice on the river when they put their two 18-foot flat bottom boats into the water around 5:30 in the morning. Nebraska game officers couldn’t reach the men because of the ice and had to call in the helicopter.
The two Iowa men — Leigh Winterboer and Brad Rasmussen — and the other hunters were rescued safely without injury. The other rescued men were: Bill Lang, Huntington Beach, California; Eric Scranton, Norfolk; Mitch Scranton, Norfolk; Colby Kerber, Broken Bow; Matthew Cronk, Scottsdale, Arizona and Ben Micek, Omaha.
