Governor Terry Branstad today appointed dozens of Iowans to state boards and commissions.
Branstad has asked former state legislator Janet Adams, the current mayor of Webster City, to continue serving on the Iowa College Student Aid Commission. She is its chairwoman. Another former legislator — Wayne Ford of Des Moines — will continue serving on the Iowa Juvenile Justice Advisory Board with Branstad’s reappointment. Both Ford and Adams are Democrats, appointed by Republican Governor Terry Branstad who is required by law to try to get political and gender balance on state boards and commissions.
In other action, Branstad has reappointed Elaine Estes, the former director of the Des Moines Public Library who is an expert on African-American history in Iowa, to the Centennial Memorial Foundation. The foundation was established in 1949, around the time of the state’s 100th anniversary. It singles out Iowans worthy of the state’s highest citizen honor known as the “Iowa Award.”
Branstad appointed Courtney Greene, former Governor Chet Culver’s press secretary, to the Public Broadcasting Board. Greene Greene had moved from Culver’s office to serve as a spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, but her job was among those cut after Governor Branstad took office in 2011. Greene went to work for Wellmark after she left state government. She is now vice president for enrollment and communications at AIB College of Business in Des Moines.
Unlike many state leadership posts, none of the 111 appointments Branstad made today (Tuesday) require confirmation from the state senate. One does, however. Branstad has named a new member of the Iowa Commission on the Status of African Americans. Kenneth Morris, Junior, of Cedar Rapids — the director of intercultural life at Cornell College — can begin serving on the commission as an interim appointment. However, senators will vote on his nomination in 2015 to decide if it’s permanent.
