Drake football team wants back in the title picture

August 8, 2014 By Todd Kimm

The Drake football team has adopted the phrase “never enough” as the Bulldogs prepare for the upcoming season. After winning back to back Pioneer Football League titles, the Bulldogs slumped to 6-5 last season. “We felt like last year we weren’t as hungry as we needed to be coming off the two conference championships in 2001 and 2012,” first year coach Rick Fox says. He says it wasn’t something intentional, they just lost some of their edge.

Fox was elevated from offensive line coach after Chris Creighton resigned to take over at Eastern Michigan. Fox says the motto was adopted by the seniors and they have already seen results. He says they’ve had a fantastic summer with more of the players on campus during the summer than before. “So we have certainly seen that lived out already,” Fox says.

Fox says the transition to head coach has been a tougher move than he expected. “It doesn’t matter if you are a veteran coach, I’ve coached 28 years before this year, I’m still a rookie head coach,” Fox says.

Drake opens the season at home on August 30th against defending NAIA champion Grand View.
