Governor Branstad has appointed a social worker from north central Iowa to the board that governs the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.

Sixty-two-year-old Sherry Bates of Scranton is a graduate of Iowa State, with a degree in child development. She spent most of her career working as a social worker at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. Bates has also served on a number of local boards and is currently serving on the Greene County Board of Health, the Greene County Foundation Board and the Scranton Telephone Board.

In a prepared statement, Governor Branstad praised Bates for her work in the community and as a social worker, saying it shows “her commitment to public service.”

Bates replaces Nicole Carroll who resigned from the Board of Regents last month. Carroll and her husband sold their home in Iowa last spring and this fall they bought a home in Texas, where her husband is now employed. Carroll’s term on the board ran though April 30th of 2017. Bates, who is now serving in Carroll’s place, must be confirmed by the state senate.
