Rose Bowl adds up to a check on man’s ‘bucket list’

Iowa hasn’t been to a Rose Bowl in 25 years, and it has been a long wait.

With the Hawkeyes preparing to play in Pasadena, that means an Urbandale man can cross one more item off his “bucket list”.

John Hoberg will be one of thousands of Iowa fans cheering on the Hawkeyes when they play Stanford in the Rose Bowl on Friday. Hoberg has been attending Iowa games since 1980 and has been a season ticket holder since 1988. This will be his first chance to watch the Hawkeyes play in Pasadena.

“Twenty-five years is a long time to wait in between Rose Bowls”, said Hoberg. I unfortunately did not go in 81, 86 or 91 and I might not be on this earth in another 25 years so now is the time to go.”

When asked what he expects to see when he pulls up to the stadium Hoberg said “perfection.” “Every picture you see and thinking of Dick Enberg behind the microphone and all of those Rose Bowls I have watched in the past and not a blade of grass out of place and the mountains and just a majestic scene.”

Hoberg is flying out of Omaha on Thursday with his son, Mike. They will attend the Tournament of Roses Parade on Friday morning before heading to the stadium.
