No foul play suspected in Mason City inmate’s death

January 5, 2016 By Radio Iowa Contributor

HandcuffsState investigators say there was -no- foul play involved in the weekend death of a Minnesota man at the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

Fifty-four-year-old Edward Hochstatter was found unresponsive in his cell at the jail at about 3:30 Saturday afternoon.

Jail staff were not able to revive him. An autopsy conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s Office found no signs of foul play, but could not determine the exact cause of death.

Other tests as part of the autopsy will not be available for several weeks. Hochstatter is the second inmate to die at the jail in the last month.

Twenty-eight-year-old Dacota Witham was found unresponsive in jail cell on December 1st.

Final results of Witham’s autopsy are not available yet, but investigators as well do not suspect foul play in his death.
