Police car lightsA police standoff with an unidentified man in western Iowa last night ended in gunfire.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a welfare check request for a male subject residing at an apartment complex in Schleswig.

Deputies arrived at the apartment at approximately 6:20 PM. As they approached a male subject pointed a long gun at the deputies and threatened to shoot if they did not back away.

Deputies evacuated the other apartments for the safety of the residents, and a standoff ensued with multiple agencies attempting to negotiate a peaceful resolution.

Following a four-and-a-half hour standoff, at approximately 11:45 PM, the man opened the door and pointed his gun at officers and fired one round. A Crawford County Deputy returned fire striking the man.

The subject was transported by life flight to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for treatment of non life threatening injuries.
