Smoking cited as cause of Cedar Rapids fire

April 5, 2016 By Matt Kelley

Fire-truckA fire in Cedar Rapids last night is blamed on “discarded smoking materials.”

Fire crews were sent to the Hawthorne Hills Apartments just after 10 p.m. Investigators believe the fire started in a trash can near a maintenance building and spread to the attached apartment building.

All of the building’s residents were safely evacuated, but two apartments were destroyed and four others are said to have significant damage.

The Red Cross is assisting those displaced residents.
