An April surge has put the Northwestern College baseball team in the thick of the Great Plains Athletic Conference race. The Red Raiders are 8-4 and part of a five-way tie for first with Morningside, Briar Cliff, Midland of Nebraska and Concordia of Nebraska.
Northwestern has won 10 of its last 13 games and coach Brian Wede credits a pitching staff that has started throwing strikes.
“We have stopped giving away free bases and when you can limit the bases you give your opponent it helps give the team a chance to win”, said Wede. “Our pitchers have done a good job of buying into that philosophy and have really started challenging hitters and the results have followed.”
There are two weeks remaining in the regular season but Wede says with five teams tried for first there is no reason to start watching the scoreboard.
