Herbicide and soybean oil spill after accident in Lyon County

June 29, 2016 By O. Kay Henderson

Fire-truckSoybean oil and farm chemicals spilled into a ditch in far northwest Iowa’s Lyon County on Tuesday after a roll-over accident.

The wreck happened about six miles west of Rock Rapids. A flatbed trailer rolled into a ditch. Some soybean herbicide spilled, along with about 150 gallons of soybean oil and 5,000 gallons of water. Environmental specialists who work in the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ field office in Spencer went to the scene and collected water samples.

The spilled materials reached an unnamed tributary of Mud Creek and the Rock River. State officials didn’t see any dead fish, but the water along 150-feet of the stream was a milky white color.  The ditch was dammed up.

The spilled material and liquid is being applied to farm ground nearby.
