Bank robber shot and killed in Fort Madison

Police-lights-300x192A bank robbery suspect is dead after exchanging gunfire with police in southeast Iowa Wednesday.

Police responded to the robbery at the Fort Madison Bank and Trust west-end branch shortly after 10 a.m. and saw a man running from the bank with cash in hand. A news release states the man fired “multiple rounds in the direction of the officers” and struck a Lee County Sheriff deputy’s squad car.

Two Fort Madison Police officers returned fire and the suspect was shot. He died at a hospital. His name has not been released. The officers were not injured.
