State tax collections dipped last month, compared to July 2015

August 2, 2016 By O. Kay Henderson

state-capitolState tax collections were down in July, but officials say the decline is because the last business day of the month fell on a weekend.

Personal income tax payments to the state were up 6.3 percent in July compared to the same month last year. Iowans paid more than $267 million in personal income taxes to the state in July and officials note there was an 11 percent increase in withholding.

However, sales and use tax payments to the state were down nearly eight percent for July. A report from the Legislative Services Agency concludes sales taxes collected on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31 will show up in the August report.

Overall state tax revenue for July — the “net” — was nearly four percent below what was collected in July of 2015.
