DNR finds feedlot the source of Jackson County fish kill

September 26, 2016 By Dar Danielson

iowa-dnr-logoThe DNR says it has located the source of a fish kill on Upper Brush Creek North of Andrew in Jackson County.

The DNR says a 200-head beef feedlot owned by Justin Clasen of Bellvue is the source of the ammonia that flowed into an unnamed tributary of the creek. The fish kill was investigated on September 9th and the DNR found more than 17,000 dead minnows, suckers, chubs, dace, stone rollers, largemouth bass and rainbow trout.

A DNR news release says the cost of the investigation and loss of fish is $4,000.
The department says it may seek restitution from Clasen for those costs.
