A central Iowa building will soon become a “digital attic” for photos on Facebook.

More than two billion photos are posted on Facebook every day. The company is expanding its Altoona facility by more than 100-thousand square feet to provide more “cold storage” for those photos. The site manager says the area will “function like a digital attic.”

Facebook started building its Data Center in Altoona, just north of Interstate io, about three years ago. Facebook has 185 full-time employees working on the Altoona campus. The company says more than 350 construction workers will continue working on the site daily until the fall of 2017. That’s the expected completion date for the third building at its Data Center.
