Authorities in central Iowa say they’ve made an arrest after a homemade bomb exploded on Tuesday.

Des Moines police say someone detonated what’s described as a dangerous homemade explosive device in a residential neighborhood south of the downtown.

Police say the blast severely damaged a vehicle but no one nearby was hurt.

After about 16 hours of investigation, working in partnership with agents from the ATF, a suspect was identified and arrested.

Police say 33-year-old Daniel Hellmers is charged with multiple felony crimes, including possession of an incendiary/explosive device and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
