Residents of Hull in northwest Iowa are cleaning up after a powerfull storm brought down trees and power lines last (Tuesday) night.
Sioux County Emergency Management Coordinator Ryan De Kruyf says storms that initially appeared likely to stay north of Sioux County shifted south before moving into the area. Hull was among the communities hit hardest
“There’s quite a bit of trees down. There was a rather large tree that fell on a house and one of the main power lines knocked a bunch of power out to a good portion of the town,” he says. De Kruyf estimates portions of Hull were without power for just under 12 hours.
Several trees or branches also landed on homes, although initial assessments showed no major structural damage. De Kruyf says they were lucky things were not worse. “Thankfully, there were no injuries or loss of life. I know it scared a lot of people just the amount and the size of the trees and the branches that actually fell were pretty big.
A Tornado Warning was also issued shortly after 10 p.m. after radar indicated rotation in the storm. De Kruyf says he talked to the National Weather Service, which is confident the damage was caused by straight-line winds and not a tornado.
