Story County Medical Center in Nevada will mark its 75th anniversary tomorrow, in what hospital marketing director Stephanie Marsau says is an incredible milestone for the organization.
“Just being able to take care of generations of families is really cool,” Marsau says. “Grandma has come here and then Mom came here, and now Mom is bringing the kids here.”
The community’s original hospital, The Sanitarium, was destroyed by fire in the 1940s.
“They referred to it as Old San,” Marsau says. “After it burned down, they said, ‘We can’t be without a hospital,’ and it was really the people of Nevada who banded together and raised money to build a new hospital.”
With the second world war underway, it took more than seven years to construct the new medical center, and she notes, there have been a lot of changes to the building since then.
“Many people may remember that the hospital used to be closer to downtown, and the clinic was there until about 11 years ago, so just seeing the growth that we’ve experienced,” Marsau says. “Everybody knows about our senior care facility now that is out here.”
Some of the longest-tenured employees have been at the medical center 30-plus years and are now taking care of the children and grandchildren of previous patients.
