The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services says a baby girl was turned over to the state earlier this month under the Safe Haven law.
The baby girl was born September 8th and is now with a foster family until permanent family is determined. The Safe Haven law allows parents in crisis who determine they cannot care for an infant who is up to 90 days old to turn it over at hospitals, police and fire stations with no questions asked.
This is the second baby girl turned over under the Safe Haven law this year, the other was in March, and a boy was turned over in May. There have been a total of 82 babies turned over since the law went into effect in 2002.
