After three weeks of air attacks, Senator Chuck Grassley says the U-S-ledassault on Kosovo is NOT proving successful. While some polls show growingsupport for the U-S to send in ground troops, the Iowa republican says he’dOPPOSE such a vote in Congress to authorize it.President Clinton has said he would NOT support ground troops in Yugoslavia,but Grassley says Congressional action could change Clinton’s opinion.Iowa Fifth District Congressman Tom Latham also OPPOSES sending U-S groundtroops to Yugoslavia. Latham says he’s very concerned that some support themove to commit American soldiers to get in the middle of a 600-year-oldcivil war.Latham says the gradual escalation of U-S forces in what appears to be ano-win situation has many similarities to Viet Nam. He says the pendingdebate in the House over Kosovo could hurt Iowa in another way.Yugoslav officials claim the air strikes have killed three-hundred civiliansand injured three-thousand.
