Logbook could hold clue to Glen Miller’s fate

A British airman’s World War Two logbook holds a clue about what may havehappened to Iowa native & band leader Glenn Miller. The log says a Royal Air Force plane dumped its load of bombs over theEnglish Channel after a failed mission to Germany. The navigator reportedseeing a small plane below, spiraling out of control amidst the burstingbombs. It was December 14, 1944, the same day Miller’s plane vanished.Arlene Leonard, secretary of the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society inClarinda, says the mystery surrounding Miller’s foggy death may be part ofwhat’s kept interest alive for the decades.Leonard says the big band sounds which Miller wrote, played and directed arestill very much alive.An annual festival honoring the legendary band leader is slated to begin inClarinda on June 10th. The navigator’s logbook was sold in an auction Tuesday to an elderlyColorado man who’s a big Glenn Miller fan for 35-thousand dollars.
