Thirty years ago today, man first walked on the moon — and a University ofIowa professor who’s long been involved in space exploration is reflectingon the milestone.Dr. James Van Allen says the University of Iowa has been involved in 54space missions.Van Allen is best known for his 1958 detection of radiation belts thatencircle the earth. They’re now known as the Van Allen Belts. They werefound with the launch of a NASA space probe, Exporer One, which Van Allendesigned.
