The latest Republican to launch a presidential campaign is making his firstvisit to Iowa. Utah Senator Orrin Hatch spoke at a Sunday night reception in suburban DesMoines, telling the 100 people there he’s behind but expecting a miracle.Hatch promised a crack-down on crime, a bigger defense budget, tax reformand conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices.Hatch, who’s been a U.S. Senator for the past 23 years, says he was borninto poverty.Hatch raised chickens as a youngster, selling the egss and the chickens toneighbors.Hatch worked as a janitor and a construction tradesman before earning hislaw degree. He plans to make a campaign stop this morning at theAnderson-Ericksen Dairy in Des Moines before leaving the state today.
