Democrat presidential candidate Bill Bradley proposes a new system of ensuring farmers’ income during down cycles in the markets. Bradley would have federal farm payments kick in when the price paid for grains and livestock dips below the cost of production. Bradley outlined his idea during a speech on a farm near Carlisle. Bradley said the family farm provides a sort of “rootedness.” The man who farms the land on which Bradley stood this afternoon isn’t wild about Bradley’s idea because Joe Dunn fears it’ll force farmers to fill out even more government paperwork. Bradley also favors manditory price reporting of livestock prices and tougher examination of agri-business mergers.
