A spokesperson for Mount St. Clare College in Clinton disputes a report that the college violated federal law by not reporting all crimes on campus. The U-S Department of Education review says the private college didn’t report a number of crimes in a seven-year period and could face up to 75-thousand dollars in fines. Mount St. Clare spokeswoman Effie Hall says the audit essentially involves a disagreement over the interpretation of federal rules. Hall says the guidelines in the Campus Security act can be interpreted in different ways and were by the college and the Education Department.Hall says college officials have worked with the auditors to explain what happened. She says auditors originally said the college failed to report 15 incidents, but that was narrowed down to five after college officials explained the circumstances surrounding the incidents. Hall says the 675 students on campus are should not be worried about their safety, as the campuse has always been safe and remains that way.Hall says the college is reviewing the Education Department’s final report to determine if they will appeal.
