An attempt to save an historic building in Fairfield from the wrecking ball has fallen short. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has given Maharishi University permission to raze Parson’s Hall. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. A group of local residents opposed to the demolition filed a complaint with the D-N-R, saying asbestos in the building which could be released into the air during the tear-down. A D-N-R inspection found asbestos materials have been removed from Parson’s Hall. A demolition date has not been set. Officials at Maharishi University say the building “gives off bad vibes.”
