Crime reports on all the universities and colleges in Iowa are now available on-line at the U-S Department of Education’s website. One analysis shows the crime rate among the three state universities is highest at Iowa State University in Ames. I-S-U Department of Public Safety Director Loras Jaeger says the differences aren’t very dramatic. He says I-S-U has a higher on campus population which could be part of the reason for higher numbers.Jaeger says I-S-U has one million visitors to its campus each year for sports and entertainment events — which he says skews the crime numbers somewhat. Jaeger says parents shouldn’t have any concern with sending their kids to any one of the three state universities. The federal government now requires colleges nationwide to submit their crime stats. Jaeger says he has no problem with that requirement. He says Iowa State provides much more information on-line than is legally required.Jaeger says parents should use the crime stats when looking for a college, but he says they should look at other factors too such as how many students live on campus and what types of activities take place there. You can access college crime information at: ope.ed/gov/security
