The state’s top education official says the tax cuts of the past decade have done little to stimulate the state’s economy. Department of Education Director Ted Stilwell says because of those tax cuts, the state budget’s been reduced so much in the past few years, there’s nowhere else to cut.Stilwell says the republican legislature has pressed through 800-million dollars in tax cuts over the past five years, with little to show for it.Stilwell says legislators need to quit shortchanging the state’s community colleges and universities, and invest in higher education for the state’s economic future.Stilwell made his comments during taping of the Iowa Public Television program, “Iowa Press.”
