The top republican in the legislature is setting up a bid for Congress in the proposed western Iowa district. House Speaker Brent Siegrist of Council Bluffs has formed an “exploratory committe” — his first step toward making a run. He says he lives about in the middle of the district and wants to check out the political and financial support he could garner.Siegrist says he’s convinced the legislature will approve the second redistricting plan for congressional and legislative seats, and he lives in the new fifth district, which stretches over 32 western Iowa counties — from Missouri to the Minnesota border.Siegrist’s wife supports his plans, but he’s worried about how a campaign would take him away from his young children. He says he’ll have to work through that issue if he gets into the race.Siegrist considered running for Governor in 2002, but announced this past spring that he wouldn’t, partly because of the time it’d take away from his family. Other candidates are setting up bids for Congress. John Norris, Governor Vilsack’s chief of staff, is setting up a campaign, and he may face state Senator Matt McCoy of Des Moines in a democrat primary. Representative Danny Carroll of Grinnell is mulling a bid for Congress, too.
