A special reception today at Terrace Hill will honor kids who’ve offered to be advocates for juvenile diabetes. Thirty of them wrote letters telling why they wanted to go to the nation’s capital to spread awareness about the disease. Courtney Slater of Des Moines is one of three Iowans chosen to be among 200 kids at last month’s “Children’s Congress.”Courtney wrote one of three winning letters telling what it’s like to be a diabetic.Courtney is seventeen, and has suffered from juvenile diabetes since she was five. She’d like to do more of the kind of advocacy work the Children’s Congress sponsored.The reception at the governor’s mansion today will celebrate the fact Iowa had thirty applicants for the Children’s Congress, more than any other state.
