The nation’s largest pilots union is asking today that cockpit crews be allowed to carry firearms, something not currently allowed by federal rules. The 67-thousand member AirLine Pilots Association says it would help foil future hijackings, and Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley agrees. The pilots association wants the F-A-A to change its rules so cockpit crewmembers could, but would not be required to, carry guns. Grassley says, in light of the decades of threats to airplanes, this action may help prevent future tragedies.Grassley would also like to see other new security measures put in place for airplanes, better doors on the cockpits of airplanes.Grassley also wants to see all airport security personnel become federal employees or make airports face an even-stricter series of regulations in regards to the hiring of security staff.
