The elderly man who was shot and killed last night by an Indianola cop may have been suffering from Alzheimer’s. Relatives of 76-year-old Robert Clingenpeel say he displayed signs of dementia earlier in the day and they took him to the doctor. Indianola police say they got an inaudible 9-1-1 call from Clingenpeel’s apartment Sunday night. Officer “Tom” Thompson responded, and the policeman says the elderly man pointed a loaded revolver at him. Officer Thompson fired, twice, and Clingenpeel died on the way to the hospital. The 40-year-old cop has worked as an Indianola policeman since 1986. He’s been placed on administrative leave, the standard response while a police shooting is investigated.
