A crowd gathered in front of the governor’s mansion last night to protest the legislature’s approval of a bill that makes English the state’s official language. Elliott Garfield is a freshman at Simpson College who thinks it’s a step in the wrong direction for integrating Iowa, and questions the Governor’s commitment to welcome immigrants. Vilsack’s indicated he may sign the bill if republican lawmakers approve money to help people learn English.
