Governor Tom Vilsack says a state agency may draw up information packets for women seeking an abortion. A bill in the legislature would force abortion clinics to give women information about medical care and child support that might be available if they gave birth to the child. The bill sets up criminal penalties for doctors who fail to give such information, and Vilsack says that goes too far by criminalizing the actions of doctors. Vilsack says he wants to find a better way to provide comprehensive, medically accurate information to women seeking an abortion, and the Governor says his administration will do that, with or without the bill. Vilsack says he’s made his concerns known to republican legislative leaders, but they don’t seem willing to change the bill.
