Iowa’s farmers are getting a good start on their crops this growing season. State Agriculture department spokeswoman Machelle Shaffer says Iowa’s had rain off and on, but it was dry last week, and Shaffer says we’re about average for the planting season. She says corn showed the largest jump, with 33-percent in the ground in just the past week, and planting is now 85-percent complete compared to 80-percent normally this time of year. Soybean planting is also ahead of normal. Shaffer says despite the sparse winter snow, threats of a dry year are receding. Topsoil moisture’s jumped the past week and now is rated 78-percent adequate, a very acceptable situation according to Shaffer.
