The Boys’ State Soccer Tournament opens today at the soccer complex in Muscatine. Urbandale enters the tournament at 20-0 and the top seed in Class 2A. Jayhawks coach Wes Boem says his team won’t let the top seed affect their attitude.Urbandale was upset in their first state tournament game last year, and Boem says that’s provided some motivation this year, but he says the team seems to be getting tired of hearing about the loss.Boem thinks this team is doing what it needs to do to win the title. He says they’re a good bunch of kids who’re playing together. He says playing together and passing and moving the ball is the key to winning.Boem led Urbandale to the title in 1998, after starting without much knowledge of the game. He took over after the coach quit in the middle of the year in 1997. Boem says he went out got a lot of videos and books and learned all he could about the game. The quarterfinals begin this afternoon in Muscatine and Urbandale will face eighth-seeded Waterloo West.
